Spunti e Ricerche: Volume 19, 2004

The present collection of original essays, as its title suggests, aims to present a selection of writers from the second half of the nineteenth century to the early twentieth century whose narrative experimentation and thematic content reveal the problematic shift from a positivist conception of a concrete reality which can be objectively reproduced in art, towards a dialectical vision of reality which questions such a stance and focuses on the issues surrounding subjectivity and the alienated, fragmented self as well as on a sensibility towards a modernist crisis of human values and a pervasive cultural relativism attuned with intellectual and philosophical fin de siècle crisis.

In the vast, imaginary, library containing the products of all research into Italian international migration since 1870, considerable shelf-space would need to be reserved for the materials - books, articles, PhD theses, reports - devoted to the study of the arrival, reception and lives of the Italians who migrated to Australasia. Although that migration ended many years ago, its social, cultural and demographic features continue to generate research interest and significant publications.

Antonio Tabucchi was born in Pisa on September 24, 1943 and resides in the nearby town of Vecchiano; he holds the chair of Portuguese Literature at the University of Siena. Besides numerous critical works on Portuguese and Brazilian authors (in particular on Fernando Pessoa and Drummond De Andrade, whose-works he has also translated) Tabucchi has published, since 1975, novels, short stories, plays and a variety of newspaper articles. His works have been translated into twenty-four languages. In 1987 he was the winner of the French Prix "Médicis Stranger" and in 1994 he was awarded all the most prestigious Italian literary prizes for his novel Sostiene Pereira; a film version of this novel (with Marcello Mastroìanni in the main role) has also received world acclaim. His love for Portugal and the Portuguese people has won him official recognition from the President of the Portuguese Republic, Mάrio Snares, who in 1989 conferred on Tabucchi the title of "Comendador da Order do Infante Dom Henrique". In France the title of "Officier des Arts et des Lettres" was conferred on him in 1996.

This second number of SPUNTI E RICERCHE contains a number of the papers given on 2nd August, 1985, at the one-day conference organized by the Department of Italian at the University of Melbourne on 'The Italian Peasant Movement since World War I : History and Literature'. It is to be hoped that the on-going debate stimulated by the conference will give rise to further research in this area.
